We all have our dragons to confront. Here the hero has climbed a mighty peak to destroy this beast but, the battle is hard and hangs in the balance. One of my favorite books growing up was "The Legend of Siegfried." I spent hours looking at the moody illustrations created by a long-forgotten Italian artist. They put me into a mythic world of dragons and heroes. His mysterious landscapes languishing in a strange twilight have burned themselves into my mind.
The dreamscapes of Edward Burne Jones come closest to creating the same mood for me. I guess this is where it all started for me. Those images left an indelible impression on my subconscious and stirred the first yearnings to create. Fifteen years have passed since I first decided to devote creative time to mythic imagery, and this was one of the first I started. Unfortunately, life blocked my way from finishing it all those years ago. It has remained propped up against my studio wall for all that time, pleading with me to love it to completion. Finally, the timing and will were right the last few months, and I was able to work on it. After sandpapering areas, I redrew the landscape and dragon and began the repainting with raw umber and white. Once that was dry, I used color to glaze over the grey and completed the final painting.
