This was inspired by the Poetic Edda, where it says: " Sun, Companion of the moon, threw her right arm around the edge of the heavens". Translations vary but they have same idea: " She threw her right hand around the door of the steeds ( planets) of heaven." When I read this I had a sudden vision in my head which I struggled to achieve on canvas but I think I have come close with this painting. What does it mean to throw your arms around the edge of the universe? To me it means to embrace what is tangible and the unseen spiritual, to feel the pulsing energy of life that surrounds you and to let it fill you with awe and beauty.
Have you ever sat by a mountain stream or waterfall and listened to the gurgling and splashing sound that is made as the water finds its way down? I have often wished I could cut out that piece of land and carry it all the way to my house and set it up in my backyard. There is something that touches me, and probably you, deep in side that is an echo of eternity. Water has always been a symbol of life and to be at the source of the mighty rivers is to be at a source of life. This is why our ancestors looked upon these sites as sacred and places of introspection and of spiritual enlightenment.
